CHARACTER
CLAIMS OVERVIEW
At Meadow Glen Middle School we believe that creating global citizens requires not only academic preparation, but development of students' character, as well. To help foster students' character we have created a set of Habits of Scholarship (HOS) that highlight character traits that are critical for students' for success in school and life: Tenacity, Leadership, Collaboration, Communication, and Integrity. These HOS are guides that help our students become better learners and more ethical people. In addition, students at MGM engage in a variety of service to their school, community, and beyond to make a better world.
A number of structures at MGM are used to teach students about HOS and to support their reflections on the HOS. Students learn about HOS in CREW, as well as in their classes each day. All classes include a HOS target for the day, which is unpacked and discussed as a class. Students also reflect on their demonstration of HOS in CREW, as well as in student-led conferences, and Passage presentations.

CREW
At MGM CREW stands for “Creating Relationships, Exploring Within”. Crew lessons focus on teaching the Habits of Scholarship and how they look and sound in a variety of real world situations. CREW gives students a safe place to examine how they exemplify the HOS in and out of the classroom. Our students are becoming ethical citizens through the purposeful teaching of tenacity, leadership, communication, collaboration, and integrity.

When MGM opened its doors in 2012, as a budding EL Education school, CREW was not a part of our school structure. As our school family has grown, we have come to understand the importance of CREW for students and teachers. MGM students have CREW three days a week with both single and mixed gender groupings. MGM has continued to make CREW an integral structure for a student’s life, providing time for work and reflection around topics such as, digital citizenship, gratitude, positive relationships, and service. Focusing on the HOS through CREW allows our student to develop their ethical behavior.

Citizen Scholars Recognition
At MGM each grade level house conducts Town Hall meetings. Students plan, rehearse, and carry out these meetings. One of the highlights of Town Hall is the celebration of Citizen Scholars, students who have exemplified a particular HOS. Stories that describe how these students demonstrated a specific HOS are shared, and the students are recognized in front their peers at Town Hall meetings. The image on the left shows Citizen Scholars being honored during a seventh grade Town Hall meeting.
